1971 Dodge Demon Overview

The 1971 Demon was Dodge's answer to the popular 1970 Plymouth Duster. Some critics weren't so fond of the "Demon" moniker, but it proved to be a much better choice than "The Beaver" - a name which Dodge management had considered and eventually dumped. The Demon and the Duster shared the same body shell with the primary differences being the grille, hood , front fenders and rear taillight assembly (The Demon shared front ends with the Dart line). There were three models available. The Demon two-door coupe came standard with either the 198-cid slant six or the 318-cid V-8 which listed at $2,343.00. The Demon Sizzler (code A59) had the hood scoops and sport stripes, but was not available with the 340, just the base engines. The Sizzler had sporty looks in an economical package. The top of the line model was the Demon 340 2-door coupe. It listed for $2,721.00 — Standard Demon 340 Equipment was: 340 cu-in V8 4bbl Vinyl front bench seat- Blue, Tan or Black Body side tape stripe - Black or White only Ventless door glass Custom-contoured outside door handles 2-speed windshield wipers Dome lamp 150mph speedometer with trip odometer Fuel, alternator, temperature, and oil pressure gauge Cigarette lighter Heater/windshield defroster with 2-speed fan Transistorized regulator 3-speed manual transmission, full synchronized with floor-mounted shift lever Rallye Suspension Package(includes heavy-duty torsion bars, heavy-duty rear springs and sway bar with heavy-duty shock absorbers) Brakes:10" x 2-1/4" front — 10" x 1-3/4" rear E70 x 14 wide-tread, bias-belted tires 14x5.5J wheels Dual exhaust 17-gallon fuel tank.
There were many performance options available for the Demon 340, such as the TorqueFlight automatic and the heavy-duty 4-speed manual transmissions, hefty twin air scoops and matte black hood panels. A go-wing rear spoiler was also available. Inside, available options included vinyl bucket seats, cloth/vinyl bench seats, Tuff steering wheel, center console and a 6000 rpm tachometer. "Road Test" magazine tested the Demon 340 in April 1971. In stock street attire the Demon went 0-60 in 7.8 seconds and ran the 1/4 mile in 14.56 seconds @ 96 mph. Another magazine had the Demon 340 at 0-60 in 6.5 seconds with a 1/4 time of 14.5. Of the approximately 69,000 Demons that were built in 1971 - roughly 10,000 were Demon 340's.
